Adventure into the culture of the American South on this study tour into the history, literature, and music and arts of Oxford, Mississippi, as you improve your communicative competence in English. You and your classmates hear guest speakers from the Center for the Study of Southern Culture share targeted content on history, literature, and music of the American South. Everything you learn in the lectures comes to life when you leave the classroom to visit museums, historical sites, landmarks, and famous homes referenced during coursework and lectures. The University of Mississippi’s Intensive English Program uses carefully crafted activities to enhance your English communication and vocabulary skills as you work through an introduction to US Southern culture.

In addition to stellar academics, University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) sports are integral to life here, having one of America’s most active and exciting football cultures—campus is never as busy as it is on game day. There is little as thrilling as attending a game and tailgating. It is a uniquely American experience.
The small town of Oxford is the Cultural Mecca of the South and has been home to many authors, including literary legend William Faulkner and bestseller John Grisham. At the annual Oxford Conference for the Book, Ole Miss brings together authors, educators, and book lovers, and throughout the year, it hosts writers workshops and multiple cultural festivals.
Ole Miss is also famous for its magnificent 2,000-acre campus of expansive lawns, impressive Southern architecture, and beautiful wooded trails to retreat to after lectures.

Courses
Every day, you join your classmates in thoughtfully designed lessons that guide you through the vocabulary and culture associated with the American South, its history, music, food, and literature. As your language improves, so does your confidence as you get to practice communication and build your speaking and listening skills. With ever-growing sureness in your language proficiency, you work in the Center for the Study of Southern Culture to improve your understanding of the region and explore specific historical, literary, and musical topics in the unique US Southern culture. You visit the sites, museums, and famous homes introduced in your culture and language lessons, giving you a strong experiential perspective on everything you’re learning.

Application Requirements
The requirements outlined in this section include the language proficiency scores you may need to demonstrate your language skills, a guide to the GPA range and other academic prerequisites required by your host university, and a list of documentation and other application materials you will need to finalize your application. You may need to supply additional information throughout the process, and you will be alerted through your emails and SAF Student Portal if this is the case for you.

Staying in a hotel a short walk from the Ole Miss campus, you get a sense of life at this great American university. Your on-campus dining hall daily meal plan gives you the opportunity to interact with local students over food, the greatest way to share stories and hear of life in the South. When you arrive, you receive a detailed orientation program with a campus and city tour, so you can feel quickly at home.
