Study Abroad Scholarships and Funding

Studying abroad should be accessible to everyone. During our decades of arranging study abroad experiences, we've gathered experience and advice we can happily share.

Every person, program, and university is different, so give yourself plenty of time to identify the best way of funding your study abroad trip to make your dream a reality.

There are often both local and national funding initiatives as well as financing opportunities attached to universities or schools. Your first call should be to your on-campus study abroad office. The staff there will have abundant information on scholarships for study abroad that are applicable to you—talk to them as soon as you decide you want to study abroad because funds are limited and application deadlines may close early.

See below for some university-based study abroad scholarships. Your SAF Student Counselor can also help you navigate funding opportunities, explain what’s included in your program fee, and clarify the process of paying for your study abroad trip. With all this information to hand, you can start creating a budget and developing a plan for your study abroad funding.

IES Abroad Global Student Grant (GSG)

The IES Abroad Global Student Grant (GSG) provides direct financial support to students from our partner universities who are seeking transformative international education experiences through IES Abroad programs.

The GSG is part of the ongoing dedication by IES Global, the parent organization of SAF and IES Abroad, to make global learning more accessible and to champion the next generation of global leaders.

How to Apply

The GSG applies to a wide selection of IES Abroad academic and internship programs across Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia. To qualify:

Students must be enrolled in an SAF or IES Global consortium member university located outside the United States.
The grant applies to students enrolling in applicable IES Abroad semester, summer, and internship programs. This includes direct enrollment opportunities at IES Abroad local university partners.
IES Abroad summer programs must be six (6) weeks or longer.
The grant applies to the first term only for any multi-term program enrollment.
The grant is not applicable to study tours, customized programs, J-term programming offered by IES Abroad, or any SAF programs.
GSG recipients are not eligible for other forms of IES Abroad financial aid, such as the high impact aid program.

The GSG offers direct financial support to eligible students:

$3,000 USD for students participating in an eligible semester-long study abroad program.
$1,000 USD for students participating in an eligible summer study abroad or internship program.

Important Notes on Value:

The grant is applied to the tuition portion of the IES Abroad comprehensive program fee.
The grant cannot be used to cover the program deposit.
The grant is awarded in USD only, and there is no cash payment to recipients.

The process for receiving the Global Student Grant has been made as accessible and straightforward as possible:

No separate application is required.
The grant is automatically applied as a credit to your IES Abroad comprehensive program fee, and this will be reflected on your invoice.
