At this point, they guide you through each stage of the application, notify you of the documents you need, let you know when your admission results are in, and walk you through the next steps, including class enrollment and organizing pre-arrival tests.

Academics

University of California, Berkeley's Academic Approach

As an SAF Scholar in the English program, you are very likely to be guaranteed enrollment in many courses as you are fully integrated into the English Department.

You get assistance with course selection and scheduling from the English Department’s Director of Undergraduate Studies.

Courses

You will know the English courses available prior to the start of your semester. You work directly with the English Department’s Director of Undergraduate Studies on your course scheduling prior to departure, and you finalize during your first week on campus.  

You can take three or four classes (each class with three or four units) for a minimum of 12 units. 

If you choose to take BISP – Letter and Science, you must also take Sociology 198: Strategies for Cross-Cultural Learning

  • 1 unit
  • Graded on a Pass/No Pass basis only
  • Meets once a week for 1.5 hours
  • Seminar-style class with approximately 20 students

Course & Departmental Restrictions

Since the core curriculum is pre-set for English, there are no restrictions in the English Department, and you are  guaranteed English courses. However, if you enroll in one course outside of the English Department to fulfill their own academic requirements or interests, then other departmental restrictions may apply.

When applying to study abroad, you must meet the entry requirements set by the host university—and SAF is here to set you up for success.

The requirements outlined in this section include the language proficiency scores you may need to demonstrate your language skills, a guide to the GPA range and other academic prerequisites required by your host university, and a list of documentation and other application materials you will need to finalize your application. You may need to supply additional information throughout the process, and you will be alerted through your emails and SAF Student Portal if this is the case for you.
