Academics

Lewis and Clark College's Academic Approach
In 22 hours of classes a week for five weeks, covering 7.5 hours of listening and speaking, 7.5 hours of reading and writing, and 7 hours of elective studies, you build your confidence as you prepare to enroll in your fall semester academic classes. At the end of the program, you know your English can deal with the demands of the most advanced academic course available to you. Elective studies are available in American Culture, Accent Reduction, and English Grammar.
Courses
Classroom Hours
For 18 to 20 hours a week, enjoy one-on-one interaction with professors and students in small classes that provide you with collaboration opportunities rarely available at larger universities.
Language Levels
In one of five levels of classes, from low intermediate through to advanced transition, you boost your intercultural communication skills and generate self- and language-awareness.
Elective Courses
At the advanced level, you take one seminar course. Past topics have included:

Personalize Your Study Abroad Plan With Your SAF Counselor
Each student has unique academic goals for a study abroad experience. As you think about studying abroad, your SAF Counselor will help you plan for success and support you every step of the way.
Application Requirements
The requirements outlined in this section include the language proficiency scores you may need to demonstrate your language skills, a guide to the GPA range and other academic prerequisites required by your host university, and a list of documentation and other application materials you will need to finalize your application. You may need to supply additional information throughout the process, and you will be alerted through your emails and SAF Student Portal if this is the case for you.
Language Test Score Requirements
You’re not required to submit any testing documents, but any tests you have taken in the last two years will help place you in the correct English class. Computer Delivered IELTS and TOEFL MyBest score are accepted.
Program Dates
When studying abroad, you will want to consider the time of year and how long you are away. Most programs follow the host university's academic calendar.

Housing Information

On-campus dormitory
The SAF program fee covers a shared room in a co-ed on-campus dormitory with a shared bathroom. On-campus halls foster a sense of camaraderie and togetherness, so you can dive with confidence into co-ed life with your roommate.
