About the University

The IES Abroad Granada Center will be your home base, with dedicated local staff offering support every step of the way.

Located in the lively Plaza Nueva, the Center is right in the heart of Granada—just a short walk from University of Granada and offering stunning views of Alhambra.

IES Abroad Granada takes its cue from the forward-looking city it is part of. A center of learning for centuries, Granada is a perfect place to study and immerse yourself in the music, dance, art, and culture that makes it uniquely engaging.

Academics

In the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, Granada is unparalleled for learning about southern Spain’s cultural heritage and living artistic traditions.

This two-week immersive program places you at the crossroads of Moorish, Christian, and Jewish civilizations, where flamenco’s raw emotional power meets UNESCO World Heritage architecture in the Alhambra and Albaicín’s winding streets.

You master fundamental flamenco techniques while analyzing how art, architecture, and dance interconnect in the Andalusian identity. Develop cultural understanding and build authentic community connections in hands-on workshops with local artists—and see presentation skills emerge that transform academic study into personal artistic expression.

Courses

Academic coursework:

This immersive short course guides you through southern Spain’s cultural heritage, exploring Spanish painting and sculpture (particularly Al-Andalus styles), iconic Andalusia’s architecture influences—Moorish, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque—and flamenco’s history and cultural significance.

Capstone project:

Small groups develop and present research projects applying course concepts and theories.

Site visits:

The course includes three cultural excursions, maybe a visit to the Alhambra and Generalife Gardens, the historic Albaicín and Sacromonte neighborhoods, or an authentic flamenco performance.

Day trip:

A full-day exploration of Córdoba takes you into the Roman, Jewish, Muslim, and Christian heritage of another southern Spanish city. The magnificent Umayyad Mosque-Cathedral and local culinary traditions are highlights.

Cultural activities:

Four hands-on experiences take you into flamenco dance workshops, olive oil production and tasting, traditional hammam Arabic baths, and a Live Like a Local activity with Spanish peers.

Why Granada

Tourism and agriculture rank high for Granada, a beautiful Spanish city of Renaissance, Baroque, and Neoclassical architecture. The scent of olive and fruit trees joins your visit to its mountaintop fortress, Alhambra, and as you eat the local tortilladel Sacromonte, filled with sweetbreads and ham, or a plate of las habas con jamón, broad beans with ham.
