About the Course
English for Leadership and Innovation (ELI) introduces you to academic subjects in English and prepares you to communicate more clearly and confidently in a university environment. Throughout the course, you participate in dynamic live sessions with instructors and peers, complete a project with your virtual team, receive written and video feedback from your instructors, and attend virtual guest lectures from Penn professors in different departments.
Instructors provide individualized support to keep you progressing and help you finish the course. You also have access to extracurricular activities. You have the opportunity to participate in regular conversation hours, cultural activities, and games with other students in the course, and explore other virtual opportunities offered by Penn and Philadelphia organizations.
What You Gain
You gain strategies for effective leadership and communication by analyzing successful leaders and your leadership styles as well as exploring of students’ own leadership styles. You focus on how teams develop, learn, and achieve success together and the ways in which leaders emerge.
The course also focuses on the ways technological innovations are shaping the world today and how they affect our lives now and in the future. You develop speaking strategies for discussion and practice using this language in class meetings and speaking assignments such as recorded presentations and discussion boards.
Classroom Hours
Synchronous: 5 hours per week
Asynchronous: 10 hours per week (includes independent and group work)
