About the University

IES Abroad Sydney Center

Sydney’s IES Abroad Center is in up-and-coming Chatswood, a diverse suburb in the Lower North Shore that’s highly regarded for its vibrant entertainment precinct, lush parks, and amazing Asian food scene. In this peaceful corner of the city, students connect to practice language skills, study and indulge in authentic yum cha or bubble tea. And you’re virtually next door to The Concourse, a spectacular arts complex featuring a concert hall, theater, library, and restaurants.

Academics

At the IES Abroad Center in Chatswood, through guest lectures and field visits, you build an understanding of Australian cultures, society, and industries. From there, you explore the Japan–Australia trade relationship, how it has grown over the decades, and how the nations work together. The culmination of your study abroad experience is a group Capstone Project to demonstrate your cross-cultural communication skills and your English language proficiency.

Two dedicated local staff members, including one Japanese speaker to support translation and support in your own language, accompany your group for the entire two-week program.

Courses

Beyond developing your English reading, writing, speaking and listening skills, you work in your group to build a basic understanding of business development in Sydney, focusing on key sectors of the economy. Through the process, you meet Australian peers in a youth forum where you can practice intercultural communication and show you have a clear understanding of Australian culture and how to work with cultural sensitivity.

On field visits, you see first hand the theories you learn in the IES Abroad classroom from guest lecturers and expert teachers, giving you plenty to talk about in your daily discussion group and the reminisce about at your farewell dinner and closing ceremony before you return home the richer for the experience.
