Academics

University College London's Academic Approach

UCL promotes interdisciplinary study while remaining a world leader in research, consistently placed in the top 20 in a wide range of world rankings. The Study Abroad Program at UCL is well-established and welcomes over 900 study abroad students each year from most parts of the world.

As a SAF Scholar, you have a fully integrated experience at UCL. You take classes alongside the other degree students, share the same courses/lectures, and have access to the support and facilities available to UCL Students.

Courses

Your course registration happens during the International Student’s Orientation Program when you arrive. If you need to get courses approved for credit, you should include some back-up choices in case the courses you’re interested in are unavailable. You submit your course preferences at time of application, and the university considers those courses in its admission decision.

Course & Departmental Restrictions

Some courses and departments have stricter enrollment/application requirements:

  • The following programmes have limited capacity for Fall 2024: Archaeology, Biochemical Engineering, Biological Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Economics, Education, Electronic and Electrical Engineering, European and International Social and Political Studies, Fine Art, Geography, History, History and Politics of the Americas, Human Sciences, Infection and Immunity, Management, Mechanical Engineering, Neuroscience, Philosophy, Phonetics and Linguistics, Political Science, Social Research Institute, and SSEES (Slavonic and East European Studies).
  • The following programmes are not open to independent students for Fall 2024: Architecture, Arts and Sciences, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science, Law, Planning, and Statistics.
  • Management Science – only available to students attending UCL for a full academic year or Spring semester only so they are present for assessments at the end of the academic year (not available for Fall-only)
  • Economics – Students must have taken (or are currently taking) the following courses: Intermediate Microeconomics, Intermediate Macroeconomics, Intermediate Calculus, and Introductory Statistics/Economics. Students are expected to have an overall GPA of A- across their studies and a B+ minimum in the four courses listed above and should be enrolled at a degree programme in Economics or have your Economics major declared at least a year prior to applying to UCL. The department prioritizes full year students, followed by Spring term students, and lastly fall term students.
  • English Language and Literature - only available if you’re admitted directly to this subject
  • Fine Art - only available to student studying on a Fine Arts programme at their home institution. A portfolio will be required and will be reviewed for the application.
