Academics

University of the Arts London's Academic Approach

UAL has many colleges offering unique tracks. In the integrated program, you study alongside local degree-seeking students for 1, 2 or 3 terms and fully integrate into the UK student life.

In the non-integrated program, you study for a 14-week semester designed and tailored to study abroad students. This program offers electives to suit your individualized learning needs.

Whatever program you choose, you can be sure you'll create a robust portfolio of work, experience the art scene of London and even give your own art shows.

Course & Departmental Restrictions

Pre-registration is required, and you’re placed into a specific college.  

Integrated study abroad offers the following courses across their different colleges (Camberwell, Central Saint Martins, Chelsea, London College of Communication and Wimbledon College of Arts):

  • Animation, Interactive, Film and Sound
  • Architecture, Interior and Spatial Design
  • Business Management and science
  • Communication and Graphic Design
  • Curation and Culture
  • Fashion Design
  • Fine Art and Photography
  • Illustration
  • Journalism, PR, Media and Publishing
  • Textile and Materials
  • Theatre, Screen and Performance Design

Non-integrated study abroad students can study in the following areas across their different colleges (Central Saint Martins, Chelsea College of Arts and London College of Fashion):

  • Architecture, Interior and Spatial Design
  • Business and Management
  • Communication and Graphic Design
  • Curation and Culture
  • Fashion Design
  • Fine Art and Photography
  • Journalism, PR, Media and Publishing

Portfolios are required for the following (please consult SAF Advisor for more information): 

  • Art, Design, Fashion – 20-25 images; CSM Fashion demonstrated fashion research and creative process skills
  • London College of Fashion – 5 images
  • Acting and Directing – recent performance video
  • Film and TV – extracts of film projects
  • Sound Art – examples of original sound work

All other courses require 3 pieces of written work appropriate to the specialist area.

Application Requirements

When applying to study abroad, you must meet the entry requirements set by the host university - and SAF is here to set you up for success.

The requirements outlined in this section include the language proficiency scores you may need to demonstrate your language skills, a guide to the GPA range and other academic prerequisites required by your host university, and a list of documentation and other application materials you will need to finalize your application. You may need to supply additional information throughout the process, and you will be alerted through your emails and SAF Student Portal if this is the case for you.

Language Test Score Requirements

To prove your language proficiency, you can use any of the following:

  • IELTS: 6.0 *Minimum sub-score is 5.5 *Some courses require 6.5, 7.0 or 7.5
  • *IELTS CDI (Computer Based) not accepted at UAL
  • PTE testing for any course that requires a 6.0 IELTS or above.
  • TOEFL iBT: 80 (18 in writing, 17 in reading, 17 in listening, 20 in speaking) *Home Edition is accepted
