Xiamen University celebrates 25 years of SAF: A partnership rooted in global vision

After 25 years of helping students across Asia realize their dreams of studying abroad, it’s incredibly meaningful to hear directly from our partners about the impact SAF has had – and even more so when those partners have been with us from the beginning.

That was the case with Xiamen University (XMU), one of SAF China’s earliest and most trusted collaborators. In a recent video tribute for SAF’s 25th anniversary, Lisa Yu, Executive Director of the International Office and the Office for Overseas Campus Affairs at XMU, offered heartfelt thanks to SAF for supporting the university’s international mission.

“By integrating SAF’s robust network into our global initiatives, we have greatly expanded access for Xiamen University students to premier academic institutions worldwide,” she said.

A global outlook has been part of XMU’s identity from the very beginning. The university was founded in 1921 by Tan Kah Kee, a visionary philanthropist born in Fujian province, in southeastern China, where the scenic coastal city of Xiamen is located. After building his fortune in Singapore, Tan returned to his roots to establish Xiamen University, making it the first Chinese university founded by an overseas Chinese person. That cross-border spirit continues to shape the university’s direction today, reinforcing its commitment to international collaboration and cross-cultural learning.

Today, XMU ranks among China’s leading universities under the national 211 Project, 985 Project, and Double First-Class Initiative, all designed to elevate select institutions to world-class status. XMU serves nearly 45,000 full-time students across six academic divisions, 34 schools and colleges, and 17 research institutes.

“I have personally witnessed the collaboration between Xiamen University and SAF,” Ms. Yu said in the video. “And I would like to give special recognition and appreciation to the professional and patient staff of SAF. From visa guidance to pre-departure training, they ensure students are well prepared for studying abroad.”

As SAF marks a quarter-century of championing student mobility, we are proud to be part of XMU’s story, and inspired by their continued commitment to preparing the next generation of global citizens.
