Alumni Spotlight - Tomoya Suzuki

Tomoya Suzuki: accomplished parkour athlete and alumnus of SAF x UCLA!

Tomoya's study abroad story isn't just about academics; it's about pushing personal boundaries, connecting with local scenes and finding confidence.

From his childhood dream of visiting the places he saw in American movies to placing in parkour competitions at an international level, Tomoya's journey to UCLA from Japan was anything but typical.

We're proud to share this interview piece featuring Tomoya who shared with us his unforgettable memories, the unique challenges he faced, and the surprising ways his time abroad shaped his life.

Please give us a brief introduction of who you are and what program you completed.

Hello, I am Tomoya Suzuki. I am from Japan. I am 27 years old now.

My home university is Nihon University. I studied abroad for 9 months in UCLA Extension in Los Angeles, USA in 2018-2019.

I'm a professional Parkour athlete and work as a coach at an acrobat gym. I have some sponsorships for doing Parkour, and I am now aiming to join the world's biggest competition and becoming a RedBull athlete.

What inspired you to pursue studying abroad?

When I was a child, I liked watching American movies. Growing up, I was always interested in visiting the places that appeared in movies.

So when I was in high school, I went abroad to Texas for 1 month. I immediately knew I wanted to be abroad longer.

How did you choose the university and country where you studied abroad?

LA had always been one of my dream places to visit.

I decided to study abroad at UCLA since it's one of the most famous universities in the world. Additionally, they have unique classes and very strong sports programs.

Another reason is that there are a lot of famous Parkour athletes in LA, and I wanted to meet them!

What was your major or field of study during your study abroad experience?

I studied English through the SAF and UCLA Extension program. This included speaking, how to write an essay, and so on.

In addition, students often went out with teachers to socialize and learn about American culture.

SAF has had a longstanding partnership with the UCLA Extension program! This department of the school offers its own course catalog that guarantees students a spot in classes on a wide variety of subjects. You can also enroll in main-campus UCLA undergraduate courses. It's a great program we're proud to collaborate with and bring to students all over the world!

Can you share a favorite memory or story from your time studying abroad?

While I was abroad, I joined a local parkour competition 3 different times. I got 4th place twice before placing 3rd place and earning my place on the podium.

I made tons of friends who were Parkour players. We met twice a week to train together.

One thing I'm especially proud of is that I held a Parkour workshop for students. A teacher at UCLA asked and pushed me towards hosting it. It was my first time teaching Parkour to somebody in my life, and it was especially challenging since I needed to speak English only! It was difficult, but very fun and great experience.

How did living in a different culture change your perspective on life or academics?

While living in California, I lived in an apartment I shared with another person. This was my first time sharing a living space with somebody other than my family.

I was a little nervous about it, but fortunately, my roommate was a really good guy, and I didn’t have any troubles with him.

What I did experience was a very different lifestyle! Even small things like table manners, and how they made and ate food. It gave me a different perspective and newfound values.

What challenges did you face while studying abroad, and how did you overcome them?

My biggest challenge was giving presentations to many people. I took a lot of opportunities to give presentations about my ideas and lead workshops.

This was completely new for me. My whole life in Japan, there were few times I needed to speak in front of many people. So this required hard work for me at first.

However, I learned I could overcome the fear and hesitation with presentations little by little. In the end, I got a lot of chances to speak in front of people even outside of school. It made my confidence a lot better.

Were there any specific professors or courses that left a lasting impact on you?

Yes, there were. It was one of my teachers who gave me the opportunity to hold my Parkour workshops. She knew about Parkour, and when I introduced myself in the first semester, she was immediately interested in my Parkour career. She asked for permission from the school to hold a workshop and for me to lead it. It was her proposal being accepted that led to my my first coaching experience, something I'll never forget.

How did studying abroad shape your personal growth?

The experiences of studying abroad made me confident in speaking in front of many people, and it gave me good practice in making friends. Whenever I made friends before studying abroad, I always waited until somebody talked to me. But for the first time in my life, I could go up to strangers to make a friend myself.

In what ways did your study abroad experience influence your career path?

I went to a Parkour gym in San Jose with my friends. I met a man who was running the gym and trained with him. 3 years later, he texted me “We're looking for a new athlete for our Parkour brand. I want to offer you the spot as our next sponsored athlete.” So, I then became a Parkour brand's athlete. The brand is pretty famous, and they're still one of my sponsors. It's because of my study abroad experience that I connected with my first sponsor in my Parkour career.

Are there any specific skills you gained from studying abroad that you use in your current job?

Holding workshops and teaching tricks and giving tips to foreign Parkour players! Teaching them skills in English is useful in my current job when training foreign people. After study abroad, it's a lot easier for the words to come out and they come to me suddenly and quickly.

What advice would you give to students considering studying abroad today?

I would like to give advice on the language learning since it's so daunting: search for the words or idioms that you don’t know whenever you talk to someone. Even if it's just slang, you should learn it. Then, when you have a chance to use them, force yourself to, and this will give you a better vocabulary.

You'll hear all kinds of slang in California. Get a head start by learning Northern California Slang.

Have you visited your host country or university since completing your study abroad program?

Just this year, 2025, I returned to LA for a world competition happening in Venice Beach. I went back to UCLA, but unfortunately, the UCLA Extension Center was closed. But I could still feel the same atmosphere at that time, and I got to see my friends in LA. It was a moment of great nostalgia.

What was the most valuable part of the SAF program for you?

Students who went to the same school would get together and talk in the SAF’s office, and I found this very valuable and useful. Before going abroad, I got the chance to meet some students who went to UCLA Extension. We became friends, and when we arrived in LA, we could talk and solve problems easily because we had already known each other.

How did SAF support you during your time abroad?

I was nominated as a SAF Ambassador in 2018. I sent in diary entries and pictures, and they'd share what I was doing and experiencing. My family saw it and knew my activity, and I felt very connected.

Plus when I had trouble with a class at the beginning of the semester, SAF helped immediately—even though it was night in Japan!

If you could say one thing to SAF on its 25th anniversary, what would it be?

First, CONGRATULATIONS for 25th anniversary!! It is big honor that I was nominated for this great moment.

Studying abroad with SAF gave me one of my important turning points in my life. There are so many brilliant memories. Huge things happened during and after my time abroad.

I am very happy that I chose SAF for study abroad. Thank you very much, and I hope SAF is around forever!
