It is the largest private comprehensive university in the Tohoku and Hokkaido regions of Japan with more than 11,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students. Dennis Sullivan

Dennis Sullivan is a Lead Program Specialist for the Study Abroad Foundation (SAF) and is looking forward to helping students have the experience of a lifetime. Prior to SAF, he worked in student affairs at Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), specializing in admissions advising and international student mobility. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Organizational Communication at Ball State University. He later earned his Master’s Degree in International Humanitarian Action from Ruhr University Bochum as part of an Erasmus Mundus program that changed countries every semester, which caused him to live and study in Germany, the Netherlands, Indonesia, and Japan. He is an avid reader, biker, and traveler.

Carol Carmody is the Senior Associate Vice President of the Study Abroad Foundation (SAF).  Carol has more than 30 years of experience in international education having worked in US outbound study abroad, English language program management & marketing, international student advising, and was a founding director of SAF.  Carol is an active participant in international education professional associations such as NAFSA, EAIE and APAIE. 

Carol holds a Bachelor of Arts in History from Colorado State University and Master of Science in International and European Politics from the University of Edinburgh.  Carol studied abroad through IES Abroad in Vienna, Austria and Freiburg, Germany.

Nicholas Barnes

Nick Barnes is a program specialist with the Study Abroad Foundation (SAF). Before SAF, Nick worked in higher education advising U.S. students on undergraduate research and outbound exchange opportunities. Nick holds a bachelor's degree in International Relations and a master's in Global Sustainability both from the University of South Florida. Nick has spent much time living and studying in Germany and Zambia in addition to his time in the U.S.

Director of Program Management

Lucia is the Director of Program Management at the Study Abroad Foundation (SAF). Lucia taught Chinese and ESL courses at the university before becoming an administrator. Lucia has 15 years of experience in managing study abroad programs for outbound US students. In her most recent role at SAF and IES, Lucia works with the Program Specialist team to place SAF students in western university programs, provide support to students and their families, and respond to student emergencies. Lucia is a fluent in Mandarin Chinese and English.

Alex de Gala

Alex de Gala is a Lead Program Specialist at the Study Abroad Foundation (SAF). Alex holds a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations from the College of William and Mary and has several years of experience in both international and experiential education. He studied abroad in China and returned there later to live and work for more than 5 years. Alex is fluent in Mandarin Chinese.
