Courses

The program’s learning environment gives you the flexibility to choose the course that best suits your needs. You select your courses from a number of skills-based options, including IELTS preparation.

You are then assigned sections based on your placement test results to maximize your chance of success. You will also receive personalized attention in classrooms with maximum 15 students.

Classroom hours

  • 20 hours/week
  • Core course: Integrated Language Improvement
  • Option:  English for Academic Purposes or English Skills for General Purposes

Electives: You choose from a number of skill-based or topic-based options including IELTS preparation, business English, critical thinking, lecture listening and note-taking, etc.
*SAF program fee tuition rate is based upon enrollment in 20 hours of language instruction per week

Application Requirements

When applying to study abroad, you must meet the entry requirements set by the host university—and SAF is here to set you up for success.

The requirements outlined in this section include the language proficiency scores you may need to demonstrate your language skills, a guide to the GPA range and other academic prerequisites required by your host university, and a list of documentation and other application materials you will need to finalize your application. You may need to supply additional information throughout the process, and you will be alerted through your emails and SAF Student Portal if this is the case for you.

There are no requirements to join this program. A language test when you arrive determines your skill level. No prior test is necessary to participate.

Housing Information

Homestay

The SAF program fee covers a comfortable single room in a friendly homestay with an English-speaking British family. Breakfast and dinner is included during the week, and a snack lunch on the weekends. 

During your time in Edinburgh, you become part of a homestay family, sharing in the day-to-day life of your English-speaking hosts. You have your own private bedroom, and share a bathroom, kitchen, and common area with your family,.

You share the living space, kitchen, and laundry with the family, and the program fee includes breakfast and dinner. It doesn’t include break-stay housing.

The SAF program fee covers break-stay accommodation, but not early arrival housing.
