Academics

University of California, Riverside's Academic Approach

With your advanced understanding of English and strong scholastic aptitude, you elevate your learning and deepen your academic knowledge during your study abroad experience at UCR.

Immerse yourself in the University Credit Program at the 20 departments in the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences. Here, you can build a prosperous future by learning critical study skills in transferable credit-bearing courses taught by instructors who bring real world experience into your classroom.

Courses

University of California schools, including UCR, participate in a course registration process called course crashing. You attend an assortment of classes for a certain amount of time, seeking to gain admission from the professor in courses you’re interested in to enroll in the class. 

For example, you may need to attend 10 courses in the first 10 days of classes to enroll in the 3 or4 courses you need full-time. This process is explained at orientation, and there are advisors available to guide you through it.

Course & Departmental Restrictions

The following courses are on a space-available basis with priority given to degree-seeking students:

  • Aeronautical and Astronomical Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Civil Engineering
  • Environmental Engineering
  • Industrial Engineering
  • Material Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Metallurgical and Mineral Engineering
  • Petroleum and Gas Engineering

Courses at the School of Business and College of Engineering at UCR are open to SAF students. Early applicants are given priority for the reserved spaces in the colleges.   

Some courses are only available through the UCR extension school. As a SAF student, you may not enroll in these subjects through the regular UCR enrollment. Those subjects are:

  • Economics
  • GIS

Application Requirements

When applying to study abroad, you must meet the entry requirements set by the host university—and SAF is here to set you up for success.

The requirements outlined in this section include the language proficiency scores you may need to demonstrate your language skills, a guide to the GPA range and other academic prerequisites required by your host university, and a list of documentation and other application materials you will need to finalize your application. You may need to supply additional information throughout the process, and you will be alerted through your emails and SAF Student Portal if this is the case for you.

To prove your language proficiency, you can use any of the following:
