To prepare you for graduate study at a top US university, the Berkeley International Summer Academy of Materials Science (BISAMS) gives you a rigorous, immersive, and intensive experience in materials science. On the iconic University of California, Berkeley campus, you hear lectures by world-class faculty in science and engineering before stepping into labs for hands-on research and learning, taking tours to state-of-the-art research facilities and Silicon Valley high-tech companies, as well as day visits to San Francisco and Napa Valley.

Courses

Academics 

World-renowned UC Berkeley faculty & researchers from will deliver a series of targeted lectures across a variety of disciplines; topics may include, but are not limited to materials science & engineering, big data, 3-D printing & physics.

Capstone Project 

During the three-week program, you take inspiration from your interactions with faculty, researchers, and insightful site visits with Bay Area and Silicon Valley industry partners to work on a capstone project in pairs to deliver a ten-minute presentation, in English, on a topic of your choice.

Field Studies 

Co-curricular activities will expose students to cutting edge research at UC Berkeley and the university’s industry connections across the Bay Area. Activities and visits may include, but are not limited to UC Berkeley labs and research facilities, the Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation, and high-tech companies throughout Silicon Valley and the Bay Area.

Cultural Activities 

A series of cultural events that expose you to the realities of living and studying in America, from visits to San Francisco’s most famous sites to California’s famous Napa Valley. Social events, including a welcome barbecue, will allow you to network with other participants and program faculty & staff in relaxed settings.

Graduate School Preparation

The program will help prepare students for graduate study at prestigious US institutions. Skill Development Sessions teach students the tips and tricks of graduate school applications and develop skills for successful interviews and presentations. Participants are eligible to receive a certificate of completion issued by UC Berkeley and have the opportunity to obtain a letter of recommendation from its world-class faculty.

Application Requirements

When applying to study abroad, you must meet the entry requirements set by the host university—and SAF is here to set you up for success.

The requirements outlined in this section include the language proficiency scores you may need to demonstrate your language skills, a guide to the GPA range and other academic prerequisites required by your host university, and a list of documentation and other application materials you will need to finalize your application. You may need to supply additional information throughout the process, and you will be alerted through your emails and SAF Student Portal if this is the case for you.

Each study tour has slightly different language requirements, based on the complexity of the program. The language requirements for this program are:

Housing Information

You stay in triple-occupancy accommodation in a residence hall very near the UC Berkeley campus. Much like local students, you will have Wi-Fi, community and study space, laundry facilities, kitchen, and shared bathrooms, giving you a glimpse of graduate study at a top US university. When you arrive, you and your classmates have a welcome meal, and, marking the end of your time together, there’s a farewell event before you fly home with your certificate.
