About the University

University of Auckland

New Zealand’s largest and highest ranked university in the QS World Rankings, University of Auckland grew out of its 1883 college of 95 students and four professors to nurture, inspire, and transform tens of thousands of students each year from across New Zealand, Asia-Pacific, and the world. Auckland Uni was the birthplace of programming language R, popular with statisticians and data scientists, and enjoyed economy research and lectures led by Phillips-curve founder William Phillips, the influential economist. Still today teachers at University of Auckland create a vibrant atmosphere in both on- and offline lectures and classes, encouraging active participation and lively discussion that drives students towards success and deepens respect for the essence of what makes people different.

Courses

Your classes are a mix of offline activities, such as discussion forum posting, and live interactive Zoom sessions on coursework topics with your tutors. Zoom sessions can be one-to-one or small group tutorials.

You attend 10 live synchronous sessions each week in a foundation skills class and an elective class. Your tutor sets tasks, checks back in, divides you into break-out rooms, and provides feedback and explanations. You also practice with other students.

This course has four levels: EAP Intro, EAP1, EAP 2, EAP3. Each level has two sessions of lessons every day:

  • EAP Intro: Academic English (session 1) + IELTS or university study skills (session 2)
  • EAP1: Academic English (session 1) + IELTS or university preparation skills (session 2)
  • EAP 2: Academic English (session 1) + IELTS or university preparation skills (session 2)
  • EAP3: Academic English (session 1) + IELTS or university preparation skills (session 2)

If you wish to improve your IELTS band scores, you may choose:

  • Academic English (session 1) + IELTS (session 2)
  • Take an IELTS test upon completion of the course at ELA's official IELTS Test Centre.

If you wish to improve your English for future tertiary studies, you may choose:

  • Academic English (session 1) + university preparation skills (session 2)

You will need to take the ELA online placement test on the first day of class. You also need to submit a writing task and have an individual speaking test via Zoom with a tutor. You will then be classed and emailed all the information as needed to log in to your virtual classes.
