Students choose from among 13 distinct academic programs/themes:
American National Politics
D.C. is the heart, soul, and lifeblood of American political life. Students learn first-hand how the game is played and take an in-depth look at the process and repercussions of politics in America. Topics of discussion include the balance of power, elections, policy, and legislation.
Contemporary Islam: Politics and Culture
The contemporary Islam semester combines a rigorous and in-depth investigation of Islamic resources, contributions, and insights with hands-on experience to allow you to develop expertise on Islamic perspectives along with professional skills and political experience. The program includes three weeks of travel to Egypt and Jordan.
Economic Policy
The seminar aims to take textbook economic theory and apply it in the city where policy is formed and hotly debated on a daily, hourly, even minute-by-minute basis. Students meet with power players from some of the most influential economic organizations in the world, including the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the Federal Reserve Board and officials from government agencies, think tanks, and economic interest groups headquartered in D.C.
U.S. Foreign Policy
Students examine the institutions, participants, and processes involved in international policy-making and delve into issue areas such as national security and arms control, the Middle East crisis, international economic policy, and international development. These discussions are enhanced by direct interaction with lobbyists, decision makers, government officials, public opinion shapers, members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of the media, and leading academic experts.
International Business and Trade
Seventy-five percent of all multinational companies now boast offices in D.C., 200 foreign-owned companies are based in the greater metropolitan district and DC has become an information technology, Internet, and communications epicenter and home to such companies as AOL-Time Warner, Oracle. In the seminar component, discussion covers major issues such as export/import procedures, foreign investment, political risk analysis as well as business opportunities in the Middle East, Latin America, Eastern Europe, and the Pacific Rim.

International Environment and Development
Understanding international environmental problems and politics, international development challenges, and the nexus between these areas is at the heart of this seminar. First-hand exposure to a developing region struggling with issues of development while safeguarding the environment is critical to student learning so this seminar includes a three weeks investigation trip overseas to Ecuador (fall semester) or Ghana(spring semester).
International Law and Organizations
From classroom discussions outlying the theoretical overview of international law and organizations, this seminar travels directly to the key organizations governing relations among nations: the United Nations in New York City, the European Union in Brussels, the International Criminal Court in Strasbourg as well as the International Court of Justice and the World Criminal Court in The Hague.
Journalism
The Journalism Semester provides students with a close-up look at news reporting and an introduction to the principles, ethics, and issues of journalism in Washington, D.C. Scandal. Power plays. Cover-ups. It's all in a day's work during the Washington Semester in Journalism.
Justice
The Justice Semester explores the interrelationships between the institutions and individuals operating in the criminal justice system. It grapples with the problems of the civil justice system, the moral and philosophical aspects of justice, and the role of punishment and rehabilitation in society.
Peace and Conflict Resolution
This seminar explores social and political conflicts around the world, with an emphasis on peacebuilding initiatives between people, communities, and nations. Washington, D.C., is an international hub and the place to study this new and growing field. But the Washington Semester Program takes the experience even one step further and sends students on a three-week overseas field practicum to a region which has experienced the conflict and peace process firsthand. Includes travel to Cyprus, Greece, and Turkey.
American Public Law
This program traces American public law through its origination, formulation, implementation, and interpretation. Current issues confronting the republic and the processes by which decisions are made constitute the core of the program.
Transforming Communities
Students look at how to make neighborhoods better places to live, how to help people empower themselves, and how to take action, whether through the legal system, the political system, the economic system, or the social system. Students will become an expert in assessing local problems and resolving them through community initiatives and national government support
