University of Vermont

Environmentally conscious students at the University of Vermont reflect the Latin name for their school: Universitas Virdis Montis, or University of the Green Mountain. And it’s no wonder why the Cat amounts are considered tree-huggers. Located in Burlington, UVM’s campus sits between the shores of Lake Champlain and the slopes of the Green Mountains. It is a smorgasbord of architecture spanning 200 years from Federal Style to Post-Modern Style. Many buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Gathering information for term papers and reports is made easy through UVM’s Sage, an electronic guide to resources, and Voyager, an electronic listing of the libraries’ catalogs. The university has several library collections including the Bailey/Howe Library, the largest library in the state, with more than one million volumes; Cook Chemistry/Physics Library; Dana Medical Library; and the Library Research Annex, preserving and protecting rare books and materials.

The University’s location offers opportunities for academic internships. Students may choose to participate in studies including the Cooperative for Real Education in Agricultural Management (CREAM) where pre-veterinary and agri-business students can get first-hand experience managing a dairy herd at the Paul Miller Research Center and students enrolled in the equine studies option in animal science have a similar opportunity at EQUUS, a management program for those planning to seek employment in the equine industry. Environmental field studies opportunities abound in the natural laboratory that surrounds the university-Vermont.

The stunning campus and surrounding area keep students busy with exploration by hiking, biking, rock climbing, and white-water rafting. If that were not enough, skiing makes the long, Vermont winters bearable. Sugarbush and Stowe two world renowned ski resorts are less than an hour away.

Housing

Residence halls are situated in three mini-campuses: Main Campus, East Campus and Redstone. Each has its own distinctive personality. Other choices include residential houses for students who have shared interests, such as environmental or academic, or the Living and Learning Center, where students with similar interests live together in suites and create their own programs with the help of faculty.

Courses

It’s not surprising given the university’s majestic setting that environmental science, natural and life sciences, and health sciences are some of the university’s strongest programs. Research and hands-on opportunities in a variety of fields including agriculture, health and natural resources are an important part of the education experience at UVM.
