University of St. Thomas
Since its’ founding in 1885, the University of St. Thomas has experienced amazing growth. Starting with only 62 male students, the institution has grown into an outstanding Catholic, co-educational university with slightly over 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Today St. Thomas offers more than 80 majors and is ranked ninth in the Midwest by U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Colleges” issue.
The school’s goal to integrate faith with secular education attracts not only Roman Catholics, who make up 54 percent of the student body, but also Protestants, 26 percent; and students of other faiths. The school also promotes intellectual curiosity, career competency, moral responsibility and cultural awareness. Another goal of St. Thomas’s goals is to give its students an international perspective and appreciation of cultural diversity. The Higher Education Consortium for Urban Affairs gives students the opportunity to study community building in an urban setting and the Hispanic Pre-college Project is aimed at improving educational achievement in the Latino community. Students may also join the Volunteer Tutoring Program for children in homeless centers or the Volunteers in Action at Twin Cities Shiners Hospital.
St. Thomas sponsors one of the most varied and extensive intramural sports programs among schools of its size in the country and the centerpiece of the University’s sports facilities is a physical education, athletics, and activities complex that included the 2,200-seat Schoenecker Arena and Coughland Field house. These facilities together provide St. Thomas students with outstanding athletic opportunities, including indoor track and basketball, racquetball, tennis and volleyball courts, two swimming pools as well as fitness and weight rooms.
Housing
The university has seven single sex residence halls on campus and manages apartment style housing a close distance away. The residence halls come equipped with cable TV, kitchenettes, laundry facilities, and telephones with voice mail service. Students also have access to nearly 900 computer terminals throughout the campus. The cost of mandatory meal plans are not included in SAF program fee.
Courses
Business is one the university’s strongest majors. Engineering and science programs have gotten a boost through the Frey Science and Engineering Center and recently St. Thomas has added an arts center and new law school. Students receive extensive individual attention and guidance from the faculty and there are many opportunities for collaboration on research projects.
