How does a college or university stand out from the rest? The University of the South prides itself on being a distinctive choice for students interested in a challenging but nurturing environment. From its distinguished literature and writing program to its beautiful setting on the bluffs of Cumberland Plateau, the University of the South will give you a taste of exceptional academics and southern hospitality. The University is affectionately called Sewanee for its home in Sewanee, Tennessee, population 2,500.   

Created by Episcopal bishops in 1857 to form a singular university in the South, Sewanee is now home to both the university and a seminary. Known as the Domain, the campus, town and 10,000 acres of land featuring forests, bluffs and numerous lakes are owned by the university.

The sandstone cliffs of the Cumberland Plateau test the skills of climbers with crags ranging in from 35 to 80 feet in height. Moderate temperatures guarantee year-round climbing on the steep overhangs within a short walk or bike ride in the Domain. Climbing at Foster Falls, Tennessee Wall and Sunset are also within an hour’s drive. The university is also located in the heart of Tennessee’s caving country. Beginner to advanced vertical caves with waterfalls and mud will test your spelunking prowess. Sewanee’s Canoe Club won 22 national championships, and the Mountain Bike Club has some of the best trails in the South.

Housing

Sewanee has 27 unique housing options that include women’s halls, men’s halls, co-ed halls, and special interest houses such as language houses and an eco-house. A mix of classes exists in all residence halls and houses. Each residence hall room is furnished with a twin-sized bed, desk and chair, chest, bookcase, and closet space for each student. The SAF program fee does not include the cost of the mandatory meal plan.

Courses

Sewanee is known for its strong writing and literature program where students study Shakespeare’s plays, Hemingway’s novels and the poetry of Yeats. It’s only natural that geology, forestry and natural resources are also popular majors at Sewanee when you consider its beautiful setting with rocks, minerals, fossils and landforms outside your backdoor.
