The city of Northampton, only a five-minute walk from campus, is an architectural delight. Pre-Colonial buildings sit side by side with Greek revival and Victorian homes all complimenting the 20th century commercial buildings. This balance of old and new is what gives Northampton its unique charm. The downtown center is dynamic filled with restaurants, cafes, movie theaters, art galleries, boutique shops, and ice cream stores.
Students who enjoy cycling or other recreational activities may frequent the Norwottuck Rail Trail, linking Northampton to the neighboring towns of Hadley and Amherst. For a lively afternoon visit Look Park to enjoy a visit to the Christenson Zoo, take a ride on the bumper boats, play a round of miniature gold or relax with a picnic.
Northampton is situated in a river valley at the foot of the Berkshire Mountains making it a wonderland for winter sports and summer recreation. Ski slopes are only 10 minutes away where you can try snowboarding, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. In the warmer months, horseback riding, mountain biking and camping in the Mount Holyoke Range is at your doorstep.
Northhampton is located two hours west of Boston and three hours from New York City. Close to Smith’s campus are four other colleges with a total of 25,000 undergraduates from all over the United States and the rest of the world.
