Fall DayMount Holyoke College

The spirit of an activist who founded Mount Holyoke College is kept alive today by many of the 2,000 students who attend the school. “Go where no one else will go. Do what no one else will do,” urged founder Mary Lyon. Her dream achieved in 1837 to provide higher education for women was considered a revolutionary idea at the time.

Mount Holyoke’s goal to educate smart, influential women is never more apparent than in its list of graduates that reads like a Who’s Who of famous American women. Mount Holyoke is the undergraduate source of more women who go on to achieve doctorates in chemistry than any other institution regardless of size in the country and is among the top eight schools in the nation graduating women who go on to earn doctoral degrees in physical sciences.

Consistently named one of the most beautiful campuses in the United States by the Princeton Review, Mount Holyoke’s 800-acre campus is located in an extraordinarily attractive and culturally alive part of the country.  A world-class equestrian center with bridle trails and indoor/outdoor tracks support the strongest athletic programs at Mount Holyoke: riding and track/field. Mount Holyoke’s equestrian team won the 2000 Miller Collegiate Cup, the most prestigious collegiate equestrian championship. Field hockey, soccer, lacrosse, crew, basketball and softball are other favorite sports.

Housing

Ivy-covered halls; dormitories with window seats, fireplaces and high ceilings; and a school library with sofas scattered in the stacks add to the charm of Mount Holyoke. Most students live in the residence halls all four years. With students from 48 states and nearly 70 countries, Mount Holyoke truly is cosmopolitan. You’ll get to know women from all kinds of backgrounds and with all kinds of interests. You’ll be part of an exciting community of individuals on a campus that’s not only beautiful but also friendly. And talk about lively neighbors—you’ll also be connected to the people and resources of the University of Massachusetts, as well as Amherst, Smith, and Hampshire Colleges.

Courses

Strong mathematics and science programs at Mount Holyoke today reflect Lyon’s goal to have women achieve high standards in traditionally male-dominated studies. The school has some of the most advanced scientific equipment, especially for chemistry, and new computer and language learning centers. Psychology, English, international and interdisciplinary studies are other strong programs. Mount Holyoke’s Speaking, Arguing and Writing program is one of only a few in the nation to hone students’ writing and speaking skills in English, and the only writing center in the United States offering writing assistance in five foreign languages.
