University of Iowa
Cradled in the heartland of the United States, the University of Iowa (UI) is best known for its renowned writing program and its Big Ten Conference athletics. With an enrollment of about 29,000 students, UI is a big university but has a small-college attitude that nurtures a community of budding poets, engineers and astronomers.
Undergraduate English majors build their own individual plan of study that includes courses in poetry, fiction, essays, criticism, film, theory and, of course, writing. Playwrights, actors, directors and designers have many opportunities to showcase their work. The Theatre Arts Department produces 25 productions each season, hosts new works at the international Playwrights’ Festival and is the home of Iowa Summer Repertory Theatre. Cinema and Comparative Literature majors have access to video and film production facilities and the Institute for Cinema and Culture.
The university is located in the rolling plains of Iowa where raising corn and hogs is one of the state’s top businesses. Besides the state’s agriculture, there is plenty of other culture right on campus. Hancher Auditorium brings in national Broadway shows like Rent along with classical performances by Van Cliburn with the UI Symphony Orchestra or jazz by the Mingus Big Band. Premier works of art are displayed not only at the Museum of Art, but also in most University buildings and plazas throughout campus. The Century of Cinema Series is presented at the Bijou, UI’s student-run movie theatre.
Housing
SAF students live on campus in one of the ten co-ed residence halls where some floors group students of similar interests in international study, engineering or business. All university residence halls are equipped with high-speed Ethernet connections. Mandatory meal plan cost is not included in SAF program fees.
Courses
University of Iowa’s programs in health, business, engineering, education, law, the arts, communications and the sciences are known worldwide for their excellence and innovation. The Iowa Writers Workshop and Nonfiction Writing Program draw aspiring writers to UI from around the world.
