University of Arkansas
On a rolling hill overlooking the Ozark Mountains, the University of Arkansas (UA) is steeped in tradition and school spirit. From its Senior Walk with engraved names of every graduate since 1906 to its rollicking Razorback fans and teams, University of Arkansas is proud of its history in academics, athletics and community involvement. Faculty members have included former President Clinton and former First Lady, Hillary Rodham Clinton, who taught in the School of Law; chemistry professor Paul Kuroda who predicted the existence of Plutonium-244; and English professors William Harrison, James Whitehead and Miller Williams, who created the school’s award-winning program for young writers.
University of Arkansas students and Fayetteville residents join together to cheer the school’s teams called Razorbacks, a name coined in 1909 by then football coach Hugo Bezdek who called his players “a wild band of Razorback hogs.” The student body supports their athletic teams with a fanatical fervor and a chant commonly known today as the “Calling of the Hogs.” The Razorbacks have won more than 37 national championships in a variety of sports with football, basketball and track some of their strongest teams. Beyond athletics, UA students are active in over 240 student organizations and enjoy a wide variety of special events such movies, concerts, dance troupes, theatre groups and lectures.
