Regarding H1N1 Influenza2009-05-05 12:03
SAF is carefully monitoring the situation following the outbreak of H1N1 flu in Mexico and the spread of the infection internationally.
Most students who have not yet departed their home country are scheduled to attend the fall program a few months away. SAF will monitor developments and act in accord with advice from relevant government departments in the countries in which our students will reside as well as from the WHO and the US Center for Disease Control. Students and their families should do likewise. Because of the outbreak H1N1 is relatively recent and majority of students are departing a few months away, it is impossible for SAF to advice on the development of the H1N1 flu at time of departure.
The best advice to students families and universities at this time is to remain calm and to balance media coverage (which can be excessive, repetitive and at times sensational) against the considered and authoritative advice of international organizations such as the WHO and governments.
As for the students who are already abroad, the best source of information and advices should be the university at which they are studying. All SAF member universities have good services for international students and are in touch with relevant government agencies concerned with public heath and health emergencies. Students should follow the advice of their universities. If individual students have concerns they should contact officials at their universities. They should also feel free to contact SAF. SAF is in close touch with member universities currently hosting SAF Program students.
Students should not at this time consider returning home. They should remain calm, follow the advice of their host university with regard to H1N1 Flu, pursue their studies and enjoy their time abroad. Students should follow the general advice offered by governments and relevant agencies in their host countries concerning personal hygiene and travel. Students are advised not to travel to Mexico.
No SAF member university has been closed and we have not been notified of any case of Swine Flu amongst the students, faculty or staff at any SAF member university.
In the currently unlikely event of students having to curtail their studies and return home SAF will provide all necessary assistance. If a student’s host university were to close, students should contact SAF HQ immediately for travel assistance to return to their home country.
SAF will provide further information and advice as is necessary.
