Services Abroad
Fully Staffed Offices Abroad
When students arrive in their host country to begin their study abroad program, they are in the capable hands of SAF’s local offices. SAF local staff are enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and eager to help students understand their host university and the culture of their host country. Our offices are open for student assistance for the duration of the study abroad program and provide ongoing academic and personal counseling. SAF understands that studying abroad can be an emotionally trying experience and our local staff provides a valuable support network that helps students cope with the variety of difficulties they may encounter.
Emergency Assistance
All SAF participants will be provided with 24/7 assistance with any problems or difficulties they may encounter. In case of a medical emergency, students will be advised to first contact their medical insurance plan provider. We strongly recommend that students select an insurance provider that maintains a 24/7 emergency call center with operators who speak students home language. The SAF staff will recommend insurance providers that offer this service. In addition, students will be given the complete contact information for their host university’s police and safety department as well as the international student advisor. Staff of SAF’s local offices may also be reached by phone or pager when emergency assistance is required.
Academic Advice
Our study abroad experiences are first and foremost “academic” and our local staff fully understand the academic environment and enrollment requirements of each host university. The SAF staff monitors student enrollment to ensure students are taking an appropriate number of credits, and our staff assists students in communicating with their home university or college regarding credit transfer issues or concerns.
Guaranteed Housing
The SAF guarantees housing for all students. In most cases, students will live in their host university accommodations but occasionally students attending an English language program will be placed with a local host family.
Students with Disabilities
The SAF helps find suitable universities and housing for students with physical and learning disabilities. While not every SAF host university can accommodate students with special needs, our staff will investigate and present students with suitable options.
The SAF Student Handbook
Each SAF participant will receive a student handbook with information on academics (registration policies and procedures, grading scale, etc), emergency contacts, tips on daily life, travel hints, social and cultural norms, and financial and budget issues. This handbook also outlines the SAF participation policies and procedures.
