Packing for a semester or a year can be a daunting task; following are a few guidelines to keep in mind when packing:
- Consider the climate in your host country. Research average temperatures and precipitation at The Weather Channel http://www.weather.com/.
- Remember students are responsible for transporting their own luggage. Bring only what you are willing and able to carry. Also check with the airlines for luggage size and weight limitations.
- If students are planning independent travel a backpack is a wise purchase. Durability is of the highest importance and a combination lock will help to keep possessions safe.
- Students rarely if ever complain of bringing too little, on the contrary students find they accumulate new possessions during their adventure and are happy to have extra room to transport it home!
Clothing basics appropriate for study abroad:
- A hooded water repellant coat (with a zip-out lining if appropriate for the climate)
- A couple of sweaters
- A sweatshirt, workout clothes; lounging outfit
- One or two pairs of jeans
- One of two pairs of pants (khaki/casual) or casual skirt
- One or two pairs of shorts
- Three or four turtlenecks or button-down shirts
- Several T-shirts
- Comfortable, waterproof walking shoes (it is best to break them in before leaving your home country)
- One dress outfit with the appropriate shoes
- One pair of casual shoes, plus slippers and flip flops/sandals
- A warm hat, a scarf, and gloves, if appropriate for the climate
- A weeks worth of undergarments, socks, and two pairs of pajamas
- Additional professional clothes if student will be participating in an internship
Miscellaneous items:
- Toiletries
- Prescriptions/medications in original marked containers. Students should obtain written prescriptions with the generic name of the medication(s), particularly if refills are required overseas.
- A spare pair of glasses or contacts/contact solution
- Portable battery-powered alarm clock
- A bath towel
- Bed linens if required by university housing (also required at some youth hostels)
- Address book
- Journal
- Sewing kit
- Small first aid kit and manicure set
- Tapes/CD’s and personal music player
- A couple of photos of family/friends
- Phrase book or electronic translator
- Camera
- Laptop Computer. While not a requirement, most university students, particularly in the US, have a personal computer.
