Health and Safety Abroad

Keeping students safe and healthy is a top priority for the SAF.  Our publications, predeparture materials, and orientations include extensive information about maintaining personal safety and health while abroad.  It is natural to assume that life outside your country of residence is more dangerous than it is at home, a perception heightened by the unrelenting international media coverage of infrequent violent incidents. The fact is, however, that the number one crime on university campuses worldwide is the theft of property that has been left unattended.  Students need to be careful and cautious in their new surroundings but unwarranted fear should be avoided. 

Program Safety

During orientation we talk upfront about many of the risks students may be exposed to overseas, and we explain how to lower these risks.  We cover issues of personal safety and specifically introduce the host university’s public safety departments whose sole responsibility is the safety and protection of the campus community.  Most campuses offer a combination of safe-ride programs, escort services and controlled access to university buildings, including the residence halls. 

We understand that students may choose to travel away from their host university, host city and even host country, when classes are not in session.  We encourage students to provide the local SAF office with their travel plans and alternative contact information as a safety precaution.

Health Abroad

We cannot emphasize enough the importance of adequate health coverage while studying abroad. SAF staff will work with students explaining the specific requirements for each of the countries/universities represented. In many cases students will be encouraged to purchase supplemental insurance. We strongly recommend that students select a provider that maintains a 24/7 emergency call center with operators who speak students home language.  SAF will be available by phone or pager for medical emergencies.
