Application Process
Choose a University or College
Upon deciding to go on an SAF program, students will need to select one or sometimes two possible host universities to attend. Some factors that may affect students’ decision include the dates of the program, the cost of the program, and the English language and academic courses available. For help in narrowing down your program options, please feel free to call or email our advisors. In Japan, call (0)3-5321-6222 or email Info@SAFJapan.org and in Korea, call (0)2-735-2300 or email Info@SAFKorea.org. Our advisors will help students decide which university or college program is the best academic and social fit.

Apply to the SAF
Students can download the SAF application (SAF Application Japan and SAF Application Korea) or request an application by calling our office in Seoul (0)2-735-2300 or in Tokyo (0)3-5321-6222. Our Study Abroad Program Application provides complete admissions guidelines, outlines all required supplementary documentation, and explains any relevant application fees and enrollment deposits. Once SAF receives your application, an advisor will look it over to make sure that the university chosen can meet your academic needs. If he or she thinks that another school might provide a better fit, the advisor will call or email to further discuss your options.

Complete your Application File
In addition to our paper application, the SAF required additional materials from each student including:
- An official transcript for all college and university work completed to date.
- TOEFL or IELTS examination scores
- Program approval form
- Faculty recommendation form
- Financial guarantee letter (Affidavit of Support)
- Bank statement
- Copy of the passport information page
- Application fee
Depending on the overseas university students wish to attend and the courses they wish to undertake, additional materials such as an art portfolio, music tape, or writing sample, may be required. Internship candidates may be required to complete an additional internship application.
Acceptance
Once your application is in order, an SAF advisor will submit the application to you first-choice university. In many cases, students must choose courses from the host university's course catalog before their application can be sent to the SAF host university for an admission decision. Depending on the overseas university, acceptance decisions can take anywhere from two to eight weeks. Some universities in England and Ireland have an especially long wait for acceptance decisions. The SAF reserve the right to reject applicants on the basis of academic, disciplinary, conduct, and other considerations.
Commit to the SAF
Once an SAF host university responds with an acceptance, the SAF will send the student a complete acceptance packet. This packet will include an official letter of acceptance from the SAF and a program contract. Students must sign and return the program contract to secure their place on the SAF program. Upon receipt of a signed program contract and enrollment deposit, if required, the SAF will send students the necessary documents and directions to apply for a student visa. If a student is not admitted to the SAF host university of their choice, they will be contacted and encouraged to apply to another university or defer their application to a later semester.
