Medical Exams and Prescriptions

Medical Exams and Conditions

SAF recommends all students undergo a complete physical and dental exam prior to departure and receive an update of any vaccination(s) that their physician thinks suitable. Although no vaccinations are required for entry into the countries where SAF has programs, students should check with your doctor he/she may suggest vaccinations.

Medical forms will be sent to every student upon acceptance. If SAF should be aware of a specific health problem, please inform SAF staff using the medical form. SAF will keep students’ medical issues confidential and do not consider them in our admissions process. Informing SAF about any health problems will help make your study abroad experience more comfortable and ensures that you will receive appropriate assistance if necessary.

Mental Health

If a student has been treated for depression, anxiety, eating disorders, or anything else that can be classified as a mental health condition, please obtain insurance coverage for treatment abroad.

Prescriptions Drugs

Before leaving their home country students should prepare a list of any medications taken regularly and ask their family physician to prepare a summary of ongoing treatment. We suggest students bring an adequate supply of medications and leave them in their labeled containers. They also should obtain written prescriptions with the generic name of the medication(s), particularly if refills are required overseas.

Some medications are considered controlled substances in certain countries. Students who are prescribed such medications, may need a letter from their doctor. The letters should state that the drug is for medical purposes and that they have brought just enough for their time abroad.

Students should not forget to declare prescription drugs of any kind when they arrive in their host country.
