Christchurch, South Island

The largest city on the South Island, Christchurch is a charming, tree-lined city laid out with traditional English architecture. The River Avon winds through the center of this "Garden City" of New Zealand, and you'll find gorgeous parks and private gardens throughout.

Christchurch is a big tourist center, so the city has many restaurants, shops, cultural venues, and a vibrant nightlife. Don't miss Cathedral Square, where bands, dancers, and theatre groups frequently entertain. Christchurch also is home to the Wizard, an unofficial jester of New Zealand who gives daily speeches in front of the Cathedral. Among the 'must sees' are the weekend Arts Centre market, Christchurch Cathedral, Botanic Gardens and International Antarctic Centre.

Canterbury is a beautiful area and a particular draw for those interested in the outdoors. There is something different to see and do within one or two hours drive of Christchurch, in any direction. Since the city sits on the plainlands in the middle of the South Island, you'll be just a few minutes from the beach and an hour from the ski fields. The area also offers plenty of opportunities for camping, hiking, climbing, hang gliding, or viewing the spectacular glaciers and fjords. About two hours north of Christchurch, Kaikoura offers ecotourism, whale watching, and swimming with the dolphins. Closer to home, the Akaroa Peninsula and port area of Lyttleton can satisfy historical, viticulture, and hiking interests.
