Bath Spa University English Langauge Program

The SAF is pleased to introduce the English language plus academic studies programmes offered by Bath Spa Univeristy.

We have outlined below those options we believe will be the most popular with SAF participants.  Please contact an SAF counselor for additional information or alternative start-dates.

ESL Option 1

Start Date:  April 24

Length of Course:  13 Weeks

Minimum required IELTS/TOEFL for entry to ESL Program:  4.0-4.5 IELTS or from 450 / 133 TOEFL

SAF recommended TOEFL for ESL start date with anticpation of enrolling in academic courses beginning in September: 

-4.0-4.5 IELTS or from 450 / 133 TOEFL to begin Foundation Courses in September

-4.5-5.0 IELTS or 510 / 180 TOEFL to begin Undergraduate Course for International Students (UCIS) in September

-5.0-5.5 IELTS or 510-550 / 180-213 TOEFL to have access to all undergraduate courses for which student is qualified in September

ESL Option 2

Start Date:  July 3

Length of Course:  8 Weeks

Minimum required IELTS/TOEFL for entry to ESL Program:  NA

SAF recommended TOEFL for ESL start date with anticpation of enrolling in academic courses beginning in September: 

-4.5 IELTS or 510 / 180 TOEFL to begin Foundation Courses in September

-5.0 IELTS or 527 / 197 TOEFL to begin Undergraduate Course for International Students (UCIS) in September

-5.5 IELTS or 550 / 213 / 79 TOEFL to have access to all undergraduate courses for which student is qualified in September

ESL Option 3

Start Date:  August 21

Length of Course:  4 Weeks

Minimum required IELTS/TOEFL for entry to ESL Program:  NA

SAF recommended TOEFL for ESL start date with anticpation of enrolling in academic courses beginning in September: 

-4.5-5.0 IELTS or 510-527 / 180-197 TOEFL to begin Foundation Courses in September

-5.5-6.0 IELTS or 550-577 / 213-233 TOEFL to have access to Undergraduate Course for International Students (UCIS) or all undergraduate courses for which student is qualified in September

Note:  Students should inquire of their home university if academic transfer credit will be awarded for completing Foundation-level courses.

Students interested in enroling in Foundation level courses only without ESL must meet the following entrrance criteria:

-IELTS 4.5 or equivalent for Semester 1 (September)
-IELTS 5.0 or equivalent for Semester 2 (February)

Student Responsibility:  The SAF programs are designed to be fully integrated academic experiences whereby SAF participants enroll in regularly offered academic courses of their host university.  We recognize however that there are many talented students who would like to study abroad through the SAF but who lack sufficient English proficiency.  To accommodate such students the SAF offers “pre-semester” or “pre-sessional” intensive English language programs at a number of our host universities and colleges. 

While the SAF and the host university/college will make every effort to support students as they work to fulfill the requirements for progressing from English language to regularly offered academic courses, it is ultimately the student’s responsibility to meet the stated qualifications.  Failure to meet the host university’s or college's minimum English language requirements may preclude students from undertaking academic courses.
