Does a student need to submit a formal application to the SAF before obtaining advice and assistance from the SAF advising staff?

The SAF understands that it can be a difficult decision to study abroad and we want students and their families to be completely comfortable with their decision to participate.  Therefore, the SAF does not require students to submit their application or make any payments during the period of initial inquiry and advising.  Students, parents, and home university officials should feel free to contact our offices to discuss individual interests and concerns prior to submitting a formal application.  We also recommend that students attend an SAF study abroad seminar if at all possible.

What year do students typically go abroad?

Most students study abroad during the third year of their four-year undergraduate degree program.  Students interested in studying abroad at a different stage in their undergraduate career should contact our local offices for advice and assistance.

Can I earn a full degree abroad through SAF?

The SAF does not offer full degree programs abroad. Our mission is to provide students from Japan, Korea and Taiwan with the opportunity to experience another university and culture for a semester or academic year. Upon returning, students can finish their undergraduate degree program and treat their study abroad credits as transfer credit.

How many programs does SAF have?

The SAF offers semester, year, and pre-semester English language programs at fifty universities in six countries.

How is the SAF different from other programs?

The SAF combines integrated study abroad experiences with outstanding student services. Our knowledgeable staff provides thorough predeparture preparation and assistance, and our dedicated staff in each country where we have programs provide professional, on-site support. Our organization is known for taking great care of students.

What does the SAF program fee include?

The SAF program fee includes tuition, housing while classes are in session, complete student support services before departure and while abroad, and much more. Click here to see a full list of what our program fee includes.

How long has the SAF been in business?

The SAF was founded in 2000 and the organization has successfully assisted numerous Japanese university students study abroad in the US.  In 2005, the SAF leadership changed with Dr. David Gray becoming Chairman and CEO and Prof. John Belcher, President.  Since this time, the SAF has established relationships with prestigious universities in Canada, England, Scotland, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand as well as opening new offices in Tokyo and Seoul.

Can I participate on an SAF program if I am earning a degree at a university outside of Japan, Korea, or Taiwan?

The SAF is prepared to assist undergraduate students from outside Japan, Korea and Taiwan to study abroad at one of our host universities.  Interested students or university officials should contact our Indianapolis Office.

Can I participate on an SAF program without permission from my home university?

The SAF Application for Admission asks prospective students to obtain permission from their home university for their study abroad experience.  We do this to help students ensure that the credits they earn abroad will be transferred to their degree program at home.  If your home university is unwilling to approve your study abroad program, please contact our local offices for advice and assistance.
