About the Study Abroad Foundation
The Study Abroad Foundation (SAF) was established in 2000 and is an Indiana,
USA chartered non-profit organization with an independent Board of Directors.
The SAF’s primary goal is to provide quality overseas study opportunities, plus
academic and personal support services, for qualified undergraduate students
from Japan, Korea, Mainland China and Taiwan seeking to earn academic
credit through study abroad.
The Institute for Study Abroad, Butler University, IFSA-Butler assisted in
the establishment of the SAF as part of its mission to strengthen international
student mobility. The IFSA-Butler is itself a non-profit organization which was
founded in 1988 and is today a network of over 200 universities in 13
countries. Every year approximately 4,000 American and Canadian students
participate in the IFSA-Butler’s study abroad programs.
SAF currently operates programs in the US and Canada, England, Scotland and
Ireland, Australia and New Zealand.
Leadership
Chairman
Dr. David Gray is the Chairman and CEO, and he comes to the SAF with a long
history of innovation in the field of international education having previously
founded and managed two of the largest and most highly regarded study abroad
programs for American students: The Institute for Study Abroad at Butler University
(1989-2005) and the Arcadia University Center for Education Abroad (1965-1988).
David Gray also served as Vice President of Arcadia University. He received his
bachelor, master and doctoral degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and
has taught Political Science at the University of Pennsylvania, Arcadia
University, and Drew University.
President
Prof. John Belcher was named SAF President in December 2005. John Belcher is a
former Pro-Rector (Vice President) of the University of Westminster, London, and has a distinguished
career in international education and higher education administration both at
the University of Westminster and Queen Mary College, London. John Belcher has also served
with the United Nations
University in Japan and as a consultant to leading universities in the USA,
Europe, and Asia. He a founding board member of the European Association for
International Education (EAIE), and has published extensively in the field
of international education. Prof. Belcher’s academic background is in sociology
and also has an interest in comparative higher education. He is a graduate of
the universities of Nottingham and London and has taught in the UK,
Switzerland, and the USA.
